Metropolitan Police in Whitehall have arrested a man for terrorism-related charges and possession of weapons close to Downing Street and the Houses of Parliament.
Armed police were seen swarming the area and have now closed access to many key government buildings along Whitehall, as well as overlooking the scene. Crime Scene Investigators are also in attendance.
Photos emerging on social media appear to show a rucksack on the floor filled with “large bread knives”.
The Metropolitan Police are stressing, however, that no-one has been injured, and that the only known suspect in the incident has been arrested. They later announced that the suspect was being treated on terrorism charges.
This incident follows the recent Westminster terror attack on Westminster Bridge and the Houses of Parliament, which saw attacker Khalid Masood kill 5 people and injure 50 more. One of those killed by Masood was PC Keith Palmer, who was stabbed by the attacker whilst guarding the Houses of Parliament’s front gates.
